Players old and new invited to Rotherham hockey festival

A HOCKEY festival is being held this weekend for experienced players and beginners of all ages.

Rotherham Hockey Club is hosting activities over two days at the new Aurora pitch at the Sheffield Hallam University Sports Park on Bawtry Road.

A spokesman said: "The focus for this event is bringing together all sections of the club, welcome returning players and showcase the sport to potential players and their families and friends."

Fun activities over the two days include beat the keeper, "giant hockey tiddlywinks" and a beat-the-clock skills circuit.

Saturday's itinerary also includes — 11am-12.30pm: Rotherham U16 Girls v Invernleith U16 Girls match.

12.30pm onwards: Mixed small-sided hockey tournament for all players. All abilities welcome but participants must be at least 12 years old.

1.30pm-to 2pm: Seven-a-side Walking Hockey Match. Mature players welcome.

There will be a tuck shop and the University Sports Bar will be open selling hot food and sandwiches.

After the hockey at 4.30 pm, participants and helpers are invited back to the Sports bar for a buffet and to socialise.

Tickets for participants can be purchased on the website at http://www.pitchero.com/clubs/rotherhamhockeyclub for £5 and include playing and buffet.

Entry for spectators is free.  

During the afternoon there will be a collection for club member Chris Parke who has suffered a serious spinal injury after a freak accident recently. Funds raised will be used to aid his long term recovery.

On Sunday (10am- 4pm) Rotherham Hockey Club hosts the David Woodward Youth Festival and Fun Day at the same venue for current junior players, past players returning to the sport or beginners aged 6-17.

It includes coaching and hockey activities for boys and girls from 10am-noon.
