Phoenix lift Charity Cup

NOT a classic by any means, but Central Midlands outfit Phoenix at least finished a turbulent season on a high.

The club’s hard-fought 1-0 win over feisty Grove Social made some amends for the disbanding of their County Senior and South Yorkshire Amateur League sides during the season, both down to a shortage of players. That’s been a constant problem for the long-standing Brinsworth club, but plonking some quality silverware on the trophy shelf might just go some way towards alleviating that problem in future.

Daz Newson has assembled a pretty decent side at Pavilion Lane and, despite the usual weary legs at this time of the year, they had to be at their best to overcome Conisbrough side Grove.

The Mexborough Sunday League men bossed chunks of the play but just couldn’t find a way past the solid central defence and keeper Aaron Chapman, especially during a frenetic finale.

The clincher came after 40 tenatative minutes, during which Groves had the better of the exchanges through Jon Wattkins and Steve Ellor.
