A half-time pep-talk helped Rotherham United earn their second away point in four days, manager Paul Warne has revealed.

The Millers were trailing 1-0 at the break in their Championship clash at Preston North End.

But Warne switched formation and urged his players to be more direct, leading to a Michael Smith equaliser in a 1-1 draw that kept the visitors two points clear of the relegation places.

"I was disappointed with the first half," the boss said. "I thought we took too many chances in the middle of the pitch. I told the players at half-time not to do that.

"I didn't think we were quick enough or forceful enough. I asked them to play a different way in the second half and they definitely did that."

Smith capped another excellent individual display with his first goal since August, having hit the post early on from 25 yards.

The result followed the 0-0 stalemate at Middlesbrough last Tuesday which had seen the Millers ended their losing streak on the road which had stretched back to the start of the season.

"I think the lads did enough to earn a draw," Warne added. "Smithy had a great chance in the first half when he smacked the post to put us in front. They made a great save from Vass (Kyle Vassell) just after the break.

"Smithy got the goal we deserved and we were deserving of a point."
