Paralympic gold for Rotherham's Gavin Walker and GB

ROTHERHAM'S Gavin Walker has become a Paralympic gold medallist.

The former firefighter was co-captain of the Great Britain wheelchair rugby squad which beat USA 54-49 in today's gold medal match in Tokyo.

It was the first Paralympic medal of any colour in the sport for GB and avenged defeat to the States in the pool stages.

They had beaten hosts Japan 55-49 to reach the final.

Speaking before the decider, Gavin had fancied GB to do well, saying: "It feels like things are all coming together at the right time."

The triumph comes eight years since Leicester Tigers player Gavin joined the national squad and became a full-time athlete.
