ROTHERHAM United had to settle for a share of the derby-day spoils at rain-lashed Hillsborough as their pursuit of a first Championship away win goes on.

The Millers hauled themselves back from a goal down against Sheffield Wednesday to lead 2-1 in the second half.

But they were pegged back by a nervy home side and then spurned two glorious chances in the closing stages to wrap up their first three-point haul on their travels this season.

The Owls had gone in front completely against the run of play through Lucas Joao just before the break and Paul Warne's men had fought back after the interval to go in front through Michael Smith and Richie Towell before Joao netted again.

Will Vaulks and Towell were the culprits in thje 77th and 85th minutes respectively as they sent golden opportunities wide of the target.

Rotherham were by far the better side in the first half but trailed at the interval as Joao latched on to a through ball to drill the ball past Marek Rodak.

The Millers had spent virtually all of the half in Wednesday territory without being able to capitalise on their dominance.

A Jon Taylor shot on the quarter-hour mark was comfortably dealt with by Cameron Dawson who was tested to his limit in the 40th minute.

Smith's header from Anthony Forde's cross was going in until the Owls goalkeeper produced a flying save, then Smith headed wide when the ball was played back in by Joe Mattock.

Adam Reach fired wide on 28 minute in a rare break by the home side who looked bereft of confidence until Joao's intervention.

The Millers needed only 15 seconds of the second half to draw level, Smith racing on to Will Vaulks' pass, outpacing the Wednesday defence and finishing superbly into the far corner.

Nine minutes later they took a deserved lead as Towell tried his luck from 20 yards and the ball went straight through Dawson right in front of the 2,400-strong away following.

But they led only until the 64th minute when Joao claimed his second goal of the contest, heading in a Daniel Pudil cross after Semi Ajayi had failed to get enough distance on a clearance.

Vaulks should have put the visitors back in front on 77 minutes when Smith's cushioned volley played him in on goal only for the midfield man to lash his effort wide.

And Towell was just as wasteful with five minutes to go when he worked himself into a great position but shot over.

Rotherham could have been made to pay in the 90th minute and they were grateful to see Atdhe Nuhui miss the target from close range.

They remain in 20th spot, two points above the drop zone.
