The Millers remain a point and a place above the bottom three but will rue the loss of two points after having the best chances to win the game.

Michael Smith spurned a glorious opportunity before the beak and was thwarted by a goalline clearance in the second half.

Rotherham took a 28th-minute lead that, on the balance of play, they merited, Clark Robertson rising to head home Will Vaulks' pinpoint left-flank cross.

But the home side were ahead for only four minutes before Josh Windass's smart shot across goal brought the visitors level.

Smith wasted a golden chance to put the Millers back in front, directing a simple 40th-minute volley over the bar when Richard Wood headed Anthony Forde's deep cross into his path

The striker was denied four minutes later when his header was tipped over by a flying Jamie Jones save.

There were few clear-cut opportunities after the break and it just wasn't Smith's day in front of goal. His header in the 63rd minute was going in until it was cleared off the line by Kal Naismith.

Wigan survived two second-half penalty shouts, when Leon Clarke appeared to stand on Robertson and when Wood was dragged over, but the Millers didn't do enough to deserve the victory.
