The Millers looked to be heading for a damaging defeat as time ticked away and the Royals still led through Sam Baldock's ninth-minute opener but Joe Mattock was on hand in the 90th minute to level the scores.

Joe Newell took a corner from the right, Semi Ajayi headed towards goal and Mattock forced the ball home in the ensuing scramble.

An eighth stalemate in 10 games leaves Paul Warne's men still in 20th spot, three points clear of the drop zone.

Will Vaulks had a chance to claim all three points in the final minute of stoppage time but dragged his shot wide.

Rotherham, outplayed before the break, made a double half-time substitution and pressed throughout the second period for an equaliser.

Richie Towell's drive stung Anssi Jaakkola's hands within three minutes of the restart before Clark Robertson poked wide at the back post.

Andy Yiadom had a shot saved for Reading who hit the post through Josh Simms in the 69th minute, but the Millers were now doing most of the pressing.

Vaulks caught a volley flush but sent it straight at Jaakkola and then Jamie Proctor turned away from his marker only to see the Royals' keeper save.

With the click ticking down, Proctor was inches away from connecting with Newell's cross and Vaulks' goalbound header was cleared off the line.

Rotherham were lucky to trail by only a single goal at the break.

Baldock fired Reading into a ninth-minute lead and the visitors had several other chances to add to their advantage.

Rotherham old boy Jon Swift shot just wide after wandering through the Millers' defence on 19 minutes, Baldock should have converted Swift's cross in the 34th minute but directed the ball over the bar and Marek Rodak had to produce a quality save to deny Swift after 37 minutes.

Anthony Forde and Vaulks shot off target for the home side and the only time Jaakkola was called into action was in the 11th minute when he had no trouble holding on to Towell's effort.

This was a match the home side had been targeting for a first win in more than a month following a series of draws.
