The midfield man is on the verge of a call-up to the Welsh national side and has been a major figure in the Millers' battle for Championship survival this season, scoring six goals.

The 25-year-old, who joined the club from Scottish side Falkirk in the summer of 2016, was due to be out of contract at the end of June but Rotherham have exercised a year-long option to tie him to AESSEAL New York Stadium.

After his exploits this term and in last season's League One promotion campaign, Vaulks is likely to be a wanted men this summer and will attract interest from other second-tier teams.

This morning's announcement means the Millers would be able to demand a sizeable fee for one of their prized assets if they do decide to sell in the summer.

"Will has been integral to what we have done here," said manager Paul Warne. "This development gives us a bigger window to sit down with him and talk about a new deal in the future.

"He's a leader on and off the field."
