New martial arts club sets out to teach the art of self-defence

A JIU-Jitsu Club has opened with the aim of teaching an important life skill to locals of all ages in 2022.

Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, on High Street, Mexborough, promotes what is claimed to be world’s most effective method of self-defence.

Experienced coach Jack Taylor hopes it can give a new passion to the young and not so young. Students can also be entered into competitions.

“Jiu-Jitsu is a form of defence and, in the event of an attack, protecting yourself in as non-violent way as possible,” said Jack, who has been involved in Martial Arts since the age of six.

“Not only that, it gets you fitter because there is a lot of cardio involved. We have some people in their 60s who work with us.”

The club is one of only a handful of training centres of its kind in Europe to be certified by the world famous Gracie University.

Training is on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights and Sunday lunchtimes.
