New boy Robertson ticks all the boxes, says Richie

ROTHERHAM United believe they have a player with potential and talent in new signing Clark Robertson.

The 24-year-old centre-half has joined from Blackpool on a three-year year contract, subject to EFL and FA ratification.

It is understood Robertson also held talks with Sunderland but his desire to play Championship football helped the Millers secure his signature.

Assistant manager Richie Barker said: "Clark was arguably one of the better centre-halves in League One last season. He ticks all the boxes we look for in terms of being young and hungry and wanting to improve and play in the Championship. We know we are never going to be able to sign established Championship players so we are going to have to take people on that journey."

Robertson was Blackpool's Player of the Year last season, turning out 40 times, and played in the final game of the campaign against Rotherham at the AESSEAL New York Stadium. His contract at Bloomfield Road expires at the end of the month.

Schooled at his hometown club, Aberdeen, he spent six years there and has represented Scotland at U19 and U21 level. Left-sided, he is said to be a player who reads the game well and does all the defensive basics well.

Robertson has made 118 league appearances for Blackpool since joining them three years ago and helped them to promotion to League One the year before last.

He has made no secret of his desire to play in the Championship and hopes it can be the springboard to full Scotland caps.

“I am keen to play at a higher level and I think my performances have shown I can do that," he says.

Meanwhile, the kick-off time of next season’s South Yorkshire derby against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on March 9 has been brought forward from 3pm to 12.15pm on police advice.
