More medals for Maltby Thai Boxing kids

MALTBY youngsters came back with another collection of medals after giving as good as they got against top quality Thai Boxing rivals from across the county.

The large inter-club show featuring 30 controlled bouts with fighters of all ages from around the Yorkshire area didn't intimidate the Maltby Thai Boxing Club team.

Instructor Phil Glover took along six of his fighters to the event at the Mission Gym in Goldthorpe, Barnsley and three of them — Cole Bateman and Warrick Roberts, both aged eight, and Zara Hussain (14) — were taking part for the first time.

All put in excellent performances, showing off their fighting skills in the ring.

Phil said: “These inter-club shows are important in helping new fighters gain much-needed self-confidence and increased fight experience.

“Not all students who train want to have a real fight but some will test themselves at an inter-club because although the fights are still tough, they are more controlled with a friendly atmosphere and all competitors show great respect throughout.”

Fellow Maltby team members Annie Jones (13), 30-year-old Paul Roberts and young Reilly O’Connor also took part, putting on a great display of kicks, knees and punches.

Reilly (11) will be having his first real fight in a fortnight's time on a small show in Sheffield.

Added Phil: “I am very proud of my students. They all train hard and it's also great to see the youngsters doing something positive with their lives.”
