Millers set to make changes for Checkatrade clash

MILLERS fans heading to the AESSEAL New York Stadium for tonight’s Checkatrade trophy clash against Chesterfield can expect changes to the starting line-up, according to boss Paul Warne.

The match, which starts at the earlier time of 7pm,  is the second fixture in this year’s competition and although Warne is eager to win, he is also keen to use his full squad.

Rotherham have one point from their first Group F game after drawing with Man City U21s in August, despite eventually losing on penalties.

A win against the Spireites tonight, who have just replaced axed manager Gary Caldwell with former player Jack Lester, would offer a decent chance of qualification for the round of 32.

Warne said: “Obviously I’ll make changes. I appreciate that Chesterfield have just changed their manager and they may look at the game slightly differently to me.

“I want to win but there are certain players I may not risk.  It’s another game and it will give the fans an opportunity to look at some of the players who have been on the periphery this year. In that respect, it’s good. Some of the lads who have been on the bench a lot or played only a little bit will have another chance to impress and show us why they should be in the starting 11.”

Centre-back Manny Onariase is set to make his bow following his summer arrival from Brentford but the game is expected to come too soon for forward David Ball, who is recovering from a hamstring injury. Winger Jon Taylor also misses out.

Goalkeeper Marek Rodák is on Slovakia U21s duty as they prepare to face Iceland on Thursday.

Richard O’Donnell is likely to be handed the gloves against Chesterfield and Warne is fully behind the former Sheffield Wednesday stopper.

He added: “In fairness, Rich has been excellent in training so I look forward to watching him.

“If Rich is a level up from Marek then I have a problem when he comes back from international duty.”
