Millers overcome Warnock's Premier League aces

PAUL Warne says the battle for starting jerseys was cranked up after last night's victory over Premiership new boys Cardiff City.

The Millers won 2-1 at the AESSEAL New York Stadium in front of 2,500 fans, goals coming from Matt Palmer and Michael Smith in a game which offered so many positives for Warne's Championship newcomers.

Now Rotherham head to Mansfield Town this Saturday ahead of next week's tough league opener at Brentford.

Warne was delighted with the way his side performed against Neil Warnock's side, newcomer Sean Raggett coming on in the second half, as did Marek Rodak, just two hours after penning a deal to return to the club on loan from Fulham.

"On chances alone I thought we did enough to win the game," he said.

"Cardiff had a lot of the ball in the first half but our lads caused a threat.

"The overall emotion is that we're pretty pleased. Pre-season games don't count for anything but I thought that generally the way we played was good.

"I don't think anyone let us down, they all put in a display which makes them want to wear the shirt come the first game of the season.

"We could have maybe scored more, Semi Ajayi got first contact on three set-pieces and Sean Raggett came on and you could see why we've brought him to the club while it was good to get Marek back."
