Maltby Main bow out of FA Cup

MALTBY Main's FA Cup quest is over for another year after a sound home defeat to an impressive Newark side at the weekend.

The Midland League outfit won 4-0 at Muglet Lane with a team containing former Rotherham United defender Liam King and ex-Nottingham Forest striker Craig Westcarr, both of whom joined the club this summer.

Maltby had scored twice in the last six minutes to dump out Handsworth in the previous round but they were given fewer opportunities on Saturday.

Stretched by the pace and power of the visitors' attack, they slipped behind on 26 minutes when danger man Kevin Bastow drilled home after Main struggled to clear their lines.

Maltby had their best spell in the run up to half time and were unlucky when Johnathan Williams' free-kick cannoned back off a post. Moments later, Mitchell Dunn was a whisker away from equalising from a header.

The break came at the right time for the visitors, giving them chance to re-group, and they went on to close the tie out kicking up the slope in the second half.

Niall Smith's foul on the slippery Bastos gave Ben Hutchinson the chance to make it 2-0 from the penalty spot and the they as good as secured their place in the first qualifying round and £1,444 in prize money when 35-year-old Westcarr seized on a loose ball to fire hard and low past James Pollard on 69 minutes.

Defender Nathan Stainfield hooked in Newark's final goal in a goalmouth scramble.

Manager Louis Axcell and his Maltby players have a final pre-season friendly away to Stocksbridge on Wednesday before their Northern Counties East League season begins a week on Tuesday at home to Liversedge.

On the same night NCEL counterparts Parkgate and Swallownest begin their Division One campaigns away to Hall Road Rangers and Dronfield Town respectively.
