Local football historian looks to clear up old medal mystery

AN appeal is being made for information about a recently unearthed old football medal.

A 74-year-old man, formally of Northampton but having lived in Greece for the last 30 years, came across it while tidying up his parents' affairs.

It was awarded to a player from Denaby United when they were the runners-up in the Sheffield and Hallamshire Senior Cup competition in 1934/35. They lost to Firbeck Main 3-0 in the final at Dinnington Athletic's ground.

Local football historian Chris Eyre, who is helping to shed light on the matter, said: “I have supplied all the players names from the Denaby team to his gentleman but none tie up with his family history. As far as he is concerned, none of his family have any connections to the Denaby area.

“However, the back of the medal has been engraved with the words “Marie from George 21st'.

“Again, this means nothing to him. Hopefully somebody out there might come up with an answer, but I appreciate it might be a long shot.”

The Denaby team that day was: W. Taylor, M. Taylor, F. Smith, Burkinshaw, Hinsley, Boot, Robinson, Lowe, W. Smith, McPhail and Carte. McPhail was a former Sheffield Wednesday player.
