Late heartache but unbeaten run goes on: Rotherham United 2 QPR 2

The Millers boss thought he would be celebrating two years in the hot-seat tomorrow in style as his side went into time added on 2-1 in front at AESSEAL New York Stadium.

But Luke Freeman struck in the 91st minute to earn the visitors a share of the points.

Rotherham were still applauded off the pitch following a gutsy display which stretched their unbeaten Championship run to seven matches.

During a madcap opening 15 minutes, Warne's men had led through Will Vaulks, had been pegged back by Nahki Wells and had then gone in front again through Clark Robertson's first goal for the club since his summer move from Blackpool.

"We played against a good team. QPR definitely deserved a draw," Warne said. "We edged the first half, they edged the second. It's hard to take because they scored so late.

"The lads have to be pleased with themselves because they're taking on form teams and not losing."

The Millers remain in 19th place, three points clear of the drop zone.

Warne's first ever victory in charge had come at New York against the Hoops in December 2016 but this time his side ran out of steam following last Saturday's monumental effort in the 2-2 derby draw with Sheffield United.

Marek Rodak preserved Rotherham's lead with two superb late saves from Freeman and Eberechi Eze but couldn't keep out Freeman's stooping header as the clock ticked down.

The Millers were the better side in the first half and needed only six minutes to go in front. Jon Taylor found Richie Towell and his square ball across the edge of the penalty area was thumped home low and hard by Vaulks.

The visitors were level seven minutes later when Ryan Williams miscued his clearance and gifted Wells an easy equaliser from close range.

But within two minutes the home team were ahead again, centre-half Robertson placing an excellent header beyond Joe Lumley from Vaulks' free-kick.

Pawel Wszolek spurned a golden chance to equalise in the 68th minute, failing to connect with a ball across goal as the Millers were forced on to the back foot.

But Rotherham came again, with sub Richard Wood heading over and Semi Ajayi shooting just wide.

As home legs tired, QPR heads lifted and Rodak twice saved them before Freeman turned party-pooper by putting a fair reflection on the scoreline.

"We just didn't look as crisp as we have in previous weeks," Warner said. "We lacked some of out usual sharpness. The first goal we gave them was an absolute blooper."

"We're hard to beat. But we've drawn six of our last seven matches and a couple of wins within those would have made the table look a lot better."

QPR boss Steve McClaren said: "I think we deserved more than point. Credit to Rotherham, though, this is a tough place to come to. I thought it was a great game, end to end."

The Millers had been unable to field loan midfield man Ryan Manning against his parent club. Warne had tried some insider dealing by asking him for the Hoops lowdown but had got little out of the 22-year-old.

It doesn't need Manning to pass on this information: The night may have ended in disappointing fashion, but Rotherham are in a far better place now than when Warne's predecessor, Kenny Jackett, was driving out of the car-park 24 months ago.
