RECORD signing Jon Taylor was travelling to training when it hit him that he isn't ready for his Rotherham United journey to end.

The 26-year-old winger is out of contract in the summer and not the type to go pestering manager Paul Warne's about a new deal.

But he'll be happy man if his boss steers him to one side to discuss extending his stay at AESSEAL New York Stadium.

“I've just got to keep working hard. Then, hopefully, if the gaffer wants to keep me here, we'll have that conversation down the line,” Taylor said.

“I can't go and ask for a new contract. I'd be too shy and nervous to do that.

“I'm in contract to the end of the season and I've got an option as well. It's not something I'll be knocking on the gaffer's door about. It's not my place to do that.”

Taylor, who joined the Millers for a club-record fee of around £400,000 from Peterborough United in 2016, drives into training with teammate Michael Smith.

He revealed: “I sat in the car the other day with Smudge and said to him: 'Smudge, you don't actually understand. We are so lucky. We are loving coming in every single day. Not just on matchdays but for training as well. It's our job, but it's amazing.'”

The little forward, who has scored nine goals for Rotherham in 80 league appearances, played a big part in last season's promotion from League One and believes the revival under Warne can continue to move through the gears.

“I love playing here, I love training, I love being here,” he said. “The gaffer has made this place amazing. It's just a great place to be. If someone is having a down day, everyone gets behind them. That's the way it is.”

Along with Smith, another of Taylor's big friends is Joe Newell who is proving a social-media hit after unlocking his account and entering Twitter’s fast lane.

The Scouser stayed at Newell's flat when he first joined the club and was looking for a place of his own.

“Newelly's very busy on Twitter, isn't he?” Taylor grinned. “I think he's trying too hard at the minute. He's a funny guy, isn't he, so all the fans will be loving him.

“Hopefully he doesn't do anything stupid. I'm a bit nervous for him!”
