ROTHERHAM golfer Jonathan Thomson suffered a torrid start to his career as a fully fledged European Tour card holder when he stuttered to five over par in the Mauritius Open this morning.

Thomson, known as Jigger, needs a massive second-round improvement to make tomorrow's cut after hitting a 69, leaving him tied for 138th on the first-day leader board.

He started well with a birdie on the second but it all went awry after that.

Thomson went on to card three bogeys and a tormenting six shots on the three-par 13th hole. He'll need to cut back at least five shots to make the weekend's shootout.

Indian Arjun Atwal is the early p[ace-setter with -9, four shots clear of his nearest rival.

There's a full feature on Thomson in tomorrow's Advertiser.
