Jamie Proctor ready for some game time

ROTHERHAM United striker Jamie Proctor is on the brink of a return to match action.

Proctor is completing the final stages of his comeback from the cruciate ligament injury which has sidelined him for the best part of a year.

His return would be a major boost as the Millers prepare for the Championship and manager Paul Warne has previously said he would be like a new signing. Brought in last summer, he showed up well in his half a dozen appearances before he was struck down.

Coach Matt Hamshaw said: "Jamie has come back for pre-season with a great attitude. He's worked really hard and he's busting now to get out on the pitch and get some minutes."

Rotherham expect to complete more transfer business very soon.

A return for goalkeeper Marek Rodak remains an option, particularly if his parent club Fulham can get a replacement in for stopper David Button, sold to Brighton a few days ago.

Hamshaw added: "If Fulham get a new keeper in, fingers crossed, that's what we're hoping but we have got three or four irons in the fire. We would like Marek to come back, I don't think anyone has said otherwise, but sometimes it is not in your control."

The next public friendly is at home to Cardiff City next Wednesday (7.45pm).

Virtually all the squad completed 90 minutes in Tuesday night's warm-up games at Sheffield FC and Stocksbridge and are approaching peak fitness with the big kick-off just over a fortnight away.

Darren Potter...set to miss start of the season.

Assistant manager Richie Barker said: "Apart from a couple of players who were substituted, we've ticked that 90 minute box and that's the final physical hurdle really. We are getting there fitness wise and we can really start to move it on now."

Rotherham will not be pursuing their interest in former Chesterfield defender Sam Hird, who had a run-out at Sheffield FC.

Midfield man Darren Potter is set for an extended spell out with his troublesome Achilles injury having undergone further surgery. There's more on that and all the latest from the Rotherham camp in today's Advertiser.

"He's an experienced full-back and can cover numerous positions.

"He's played in the Premier League and Championship and he has proven quality. He can play-right and he can play left-back and he's played in midfield. He is exactly what we want.

Potter...

Ihiekwe and Newell both fine after niggles.

Potter...

"He has another fresh injury on his Achillees.

"It is important he comes back right. It has been a build-up of things. He had his operation and it didn't go to plan. He was coming back to something like and got caught in training and it escalated from that.

"He won't be part of our thinking, certainly for the first part of the season.

"Our main targes haven't gone anywhere yet but with clubs wanting to go on pre-season tours, that is delaying it all. I would like to think in the next week or so we will get one or two of those in.
