Waterfront Golf Club wants to add an eight-hole, par three, short course on artificial greens at Manvers.

The expansion project would require about 25,000 cubic metres of capping material to be brought to the former colliery site.

The club said: “Our main golf course is among the toughest and longest nine-hole courses in Europe, which is great for the experienced golfer but consequently very difficult for new golfers to learn on.

“This area of land was originally designed to be used as a golf course but was left to grow and the course was made as nine holes, not 18.

“The main shape needed is already there and the trees already planted will have chance to mature as all greens and teeing areas will be placed around the originally planned holes.”

The club has set up a golf scholars programme with Wath Comprehensive as part of its efforts to bring the sport to young people.

A club spokesman added: “We currently work with hundreds of children through several schools.

“Our new facility would be offered to schools free of charge during school time so they can add it to their regular curriculum.”

The project would create two or three jobs. The material to be imported would be inert recovered engineering waste.
