Death of former Millers goalkeeper Gordon Morritt

FORMER Rotherham United goalkeeper Gordon Morritt has died, aged 76.

Originally from Kimberworth, he made 88 appearances in League and Cup in the 1960s. All but one of those was in goal, he played centre forward in a League Cup replay at Swansea in 1964 having played in goal in the 2-2 draw at Millmoor.

Gordon was back-up goalkeeper to Roy Ironside in the first League Cup Final in 1961 having only joined the Millers that summer.

His association with the Millers started on the terraces as a youngster, it was said he even sold chocolates and crisps on the perimeter track.

In his formative years he was a defender but after a stint in goal it was decided that his long-term future would be as a stopper.

Gordon even had a spell playing up front for the reserves, scoring 22 goals in 14 apperances, including five in one match.

He left Millmoor in 1966 to play for Durban City in South Africa and after returning to the UK a year later he played for Doncaster Rovers and had spells at Northampton Town, York City, Rochdale and Darlington.

Following his retirement he regularly attended Millers matches and was a regular at Rotherham United’s Nostalgia Society meetings.
