The Millers’ summer-long pursuit of the 27-year-old midfielder paid off today when they wrapped up a season-long loan deal.

Towell was one of the most prominent players in last year’s League One promotion side, turning out 45 times, including the play-off final win over Shrewsbury at Wembley.

He returned to parent club Brighton and reported back for pre-season training there, going on a pre-season tour of Austria, however it soon became clear he remained out of manager Chris Hughton’s first-team plans.

Rotherham never made any secret of their desire to bring him back but with Towell being on a good contract at Brighton, the stumbling block was wages.

The two clubs have finally found common ground on the structure of the deal and the Irishman has become the Millers’ eighth signing of the summer.

Whether his arrival will signal the end of Rotherham’s interest in Nottingham Forest’s Ryan Yates is unclear. The Millers now have five loan players, the same amount as is allowed in any matchday squad.

One or two of the existing squad could also leave on loan before today’s 5pm deadline.

Keep posted for updates.
