Commonwealth Games silver for swim ace

ROTHERHAM'S Nick Grainger is celebrating after pocketing a superb silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in Australia  - after his 11th hour call-up.

Nick, from Swinton, was second out in the Men's 4x200m Freestyle at the Gold Coast's Optus Aquatic Centre, helping England to second place behind winners Australia and ahead of Scotland.

Cameron Kurle opened with a 1:47.63 for the English, Nick following with a 1:47.61 . Jarvis Parkinson was third out in 1:48.09 before James Guy saw the team touch home second with a stunning 1:45.24.

The Aussies finished nearly three seconds ahead in a new Games record of 7:05.97, England timing 7:08.57.

Nick, who made his international Games debut in Glasgow four years ago, seemed destined to miss out on selection this time around but after City of Sheffield team-mate Max Litchfield suffered an injury he was handed a late team place.
