The injury-hit team and their large travelling support were on the brink of celebrating a significant victory. However, possession was kicked away and from the ensuing pressure, a cross-field kick sat up nicely for Mike Adlard to go in for the clinching score and a 13th straight win for Hull, taking it 20-17.

"That's the rollercoaster of rugby union, it is exactly what happens," said Rotherham head coach Adam Byron.

"Sometimes the bounce of the ball goes your way, sometimes it doesn't. We have had a few decisions in recent weeks that went our way. We had the bounce of the ball which didn't go our way this time.

"We were frustrated at half time but really proud of that second half. The boys went out and did exactly as they were asked and showed the heart they have and managed the game well.

"In all honesty we were pretty unlucky not to come away with that W."

Although Rotherham collected a losing bonus point for their efforts, their second defeat of the season means they now trail Hull by 12 points with nine games to play, but with a game in hand. They also slip to fourth in the table behind Fylde and Sedgley Park.

"Our attitude remains the same," added Byron. "We are going to keep fighting the rest of this season and see where we are come mid-May."

Rotherham now have a double header with Chester, with the first meeting at Clifton Lane next Saturday.
