A FORMER amateur boxer who runs a community gym in a deprived part of Rotherham is on a shortlist of inspirational young Asians vying for an award.

Saif Din began his coaching journey in Eastwood before switching to larger premises at Canklow as the numbers attending increased quickly.

He was keen to encourage youngsters off the streets and into a safe space.

His efforts have seen the 27-year-old shortlisted in the not-for-profit sector category of the Yorkshire Asian Young Achievers Awards — dubbed the YAYAs.

The awards were launched last year but had to be held virtually. This year will see 250 guests at the Cedar Court Hotel in Bradford next Thursday — plus an online broadcast — with the event hosted by DJ and stand-up comedian Noreen Khan.

Dr Mohammed Ali OBE, founder and chief executive of QED Foundation, which conceived and organised the YAYAs, said: “The online event was great but there’s nothing quite like seeing people’s faces in person as their names are announced.

“The quality of entries from across Yorkshire has been fabulous and the stories of all those shortlisted are inspirational and, in many cases, moving and humbling.

“Many of the candidates have overcome great obstacles to achieve what they have and it’s wonderful to be able to share their stories with a wider audience and shine a light that highlights young people and their successes and achievements in such a positive way.”
