Town withdraw top-flight team

A LACK of players has forced troubled Rotherham Town to withdraw from the top flight of the South Yorkshire Senior League.

Club secretary Jim Dixon said the club had been left with no choice but to pull the plug as it struggles to deal with the fallout from a winter player exodus which left their resources threadbare.

Town could muster only nine players for Saturday's match against Conisbrough and had already conceded a cup and a league fixture, leaving them on minus points at the foot of the Championship.

Mr Dixon said: “It is a decision which has been taken extremely reluctantly and very sadly but with the exodus of players, we can't guarantee turning teams out. It doesn't look good for the club and it's frustrating for everyone.

“The South Yorkshire Senior League apply the rules rigidly and I'm not complaining. The league have been very helpful and understanding.”
