SLS AMG raises the roof

IT’S enough to set the heart of any petrolhead pumping—Mercedes’ stunning SLS AMG is about to go topless.

A year on from the European launch of the ultimate gull-winged Mercedes, the car has broken cover in 563bhp convertible guise.

Set to make its world premiere at Frankfurt’s International Motor Show in September the SLS AMG Roadster has undergone a series of modifications to ensure its body shell’s integrity wasn’t compromised by the loss of its roof.

Strengthening measures only added two kilograms to the car’s overall weight, however, ensuring that it’s sub-four second sprint to 62mph and outright performance should not be unduly effected.

Tobias Moers (44), head of development at Mercedes-AMG, said: "The SLS AMG Roadster is a super-sports car – just like the Coupé. It goes without saying that AMG is also determined to achieve superior driving dynamics with this open-top variant."

The folding fabric soft top should be no barrier to performance. Mercedes have limited the SLS’ top speed...but to a lofty 197mph.

Let’s hope, for Mercedes’ sake that 2011 sees an Indian summer...roll on September.
