Maltby RUFC take on Hallamshire at Muglet Lane on Saturday (2pm) in the South Merit League.

The club, set up in February, have won one and lost one so far, beating Sheffield RUFC 13-5 and then going down 52-7 to a strong Wath second string last weekend.

"We had no complaints. Wath were a very well drilled team,” said Frank Lidster, the original driving force behind Maltby RUFC. "In the second half we came back into it and scored one try to their two but now we’re looking forward this first home league game.

"We are going to have a second team out as well, so that’s another step forward for us.”

Frank, himself a former rugby player, has set up the club to put Maltby on the rugby map and to nurture local talent.

He is also keen to thank everyone who has helped get the new venture up and running.

They include Johnathan Williams, who has been in the background helping with all the paperwork.

Luke Powell has done the media work and Matt Green helps set everything up on game days.

Frank also extended thanks to coaching staff Andrew Ramrattan, Tommy Evans, Ian Kettleborough, Rob Hutton and committee members Liam Algor and Ryan Beavan.

Added Frank: "I had the idea (to set up a rugby club) but all these guys have put just as much work in as me to make it happen.

"Apart from working their regular jobs, they have all committed totally to Maltby RUFC, not to mention the players.

"We have become a family and it has only come together so quickly because of everyone’s hard work.”

Maltby would like to join the Yorkshire League next season.
