ROTHERHAM Titans fell short against a promotion rival for the second straight week as they slipped to defeat away to Sedgley Park in National Two North.

Seven days after their loss to leaders Fylde, they went down 25-17 to the second-placed Tigers.

Tries by Gareth Denman and Matt Challinor, plus a conversion from Sam Veall, kept Titans in contention at 15-12 down at half time.

When Jack Taylor went over to put Rotherham ahead early in the second half, hopes of a crucial away win were raised but Sedgley responded with a Steve Collins penalty and a converted try under the posts from Andrew Brooks to close out their seventh win from seven.

The defeat leaves Titans with work to do to get back into promotion contention.

They are now fifth, 11 points behind Park and 14 behind Fylde.

Head coach Adam Byron said: “The effort and desire was there from us but the game was lost in the small details.

“Like against Fylde, we were very much in it until the 50th minute. We were on their line, got them under pressure and didn’t come away with points, and unfortunately they later went the length of the field and got a score which put that two-score gap between us. It was another frustrating one.”

Lowly Huddersfield are the visitors to Clifton Lane on Saturday (2pm).
