Rotherham Metro swimmers make a splash with haul of medals at Yorkshire Championships

ROTHERHAM Metro is celebrating a magic month — and a haul of medals for its swimmers.

The club took a host of competitors to the Yorkshire Championships throughout February and came home with 28 medals and numerous finalist flags from the three weekends in Leeds and Sheffield.

Of the gold medallists, Hannah Worsdall swam magnificently to win the 100m breaststroke and took a silver in the 200 breaststroke.

Team captain Luke Booth won gold in the 1500 freestyle and backed it up with another after a fast, hard swim in the backstroke.

Luke went on to break a Metro record for the 800 free with a time of 8.37.21 and more success followed with a silver in the 400 freestyle.

Oliver Davis-Tootill broke a club record which had been held since 2013 for the 100m backstroke for under-15s, winning the bronze medal with an outstanding swim.

Jack Finnie gained a silver for 400 and 400 IM and in the 1500 free he showed great stamina and was rewarded with a silver. Jack added another silver and a bronze over the month.

Continuing the success, bronze medals went to Bow Gomersall in the 200 and 100 freestyle while James Cam got a bronze medal in the 100 freestyle and for his 50 free.

Amelia Stratford gained herself a well-earned bronze in the 800 and 1500 freestyle, as did Oscar Gavelle in the 800 and 1500 free.

On to the final weekend, Metro had lots of success in the 50m events with bronzes for Scarlett Fearn and Edward Rose Bronze and, in the 50m butterfly, for Ruby Gambles.

There was also a gold for Oliver Davis-Tootill in the 50m backstroke.

The final day brought one of the favourite events, the team relays, which consist of freestyle and medleys.

Rotherham saw many teams finish in the top ten.

The 200 freestyle boys' team of Ethan Hampshire, Jack Finnie, Ollie DT and James Cam showed amazing teamwork to take a bronze medal.

Many swimmers recorded personal bests, delivering swims to enable them to enter the National Regional Swim Championships.

A Metro spokeswoman said: “We continue to focus on developing our swimmers and supporting their journey with our club.
