A MAJOR cup success escaped their grasp but Wickersley can still content themselves on achieving their main goal at the end of their best campaign in a while.

Beaten 4-0 by Jubilee Sports in the final of the Rosehill Press Sheffield Association Cup, the sweetener is that promoted Wickersley will be joining their conquerors in the top flight of the County Senior League next term.

They were still disappointed not to have given a better account of themselves in the final at Sandy Lane, Worksop, going down 4-0 after a performance far removed from their strong league form.

Trailing to a goal in the first five minutes from a corner, Wickersley matched the Division One champions for half-an-hour before seeing the final slip away from them.

They conceded a second goal just before the break when a cross drifted into the net and then again soon after the restart.

Wickersley then enjoyed a better spell but a half-chance for assistant manager Andy Rawlin was their only real opening and they were pushing forward when Sports broke to complete the scoring late on.

Andy said: “It wasn't just losing that was disappointing but the manner of it. Most of us had a bad day and we didn't keep possession.

“Having said that, Jubilee Sports are a good, up-and-coming side and they were in the final a couple of years ago. We have won promotion, which is the main thing, and we went unbeaten in something like 11 or 12 games to get up.

“Getting to a cup final was a bonus and all in all it's been a good season.”
