GOLF: Rotherham Golf Club secures victory in SUGC team championship

ROTHERHAM Golf Club stormed to victory in the SUGC Team Championship at Renishaw.

Charles Daughtrey, Jack Whaley, Lucas Martin and Dean Longden shot a four-man total of 286  to beat Silkstone by 22 shots. Lucas also scooped the executive trophy, the prize awarded for the best gross on the day, shooting a bogey-free 67. Jack also shot under par, a 70, Dean shot 74 and Charles 75, impressive scores on a rather cool and windy day.

Team manager Dean said: “These lads make winning look effortless, not only today, but through the league season they’ve been excellent as well.”

Rotherham have a 19-point lead at the top of Division One, and with the Turner Shield and Yorkshire Team Championship on the horizon there’s every chance the SUGC team championship won’t be the only silverware collected. 

Phoenix, Waterfront and Wath also played at Renishaw, Phoenix shooting 326 (+42), Wath 330 (+46) and Waterfront 333 (+49), both Wath and Waterfront, will have to pre-qualify for next year’s team championship, having finished in the bottom six.

Rotherham are also in action this week, in the second team foursomes knockout, Rotherham travel to Wheatley to play Wortley, hoping for a place in the last four.

Local juniors played a part in the Sheffield Union junior side’s 30-6 win against the East Riding Union at Hull Golf Club.

In the opening foursomes match Rotherham’s Jack Aldridge partnered Isaac Marks of Phoenix to a 4/2 win, Jack was a afternoon singles winner aswell, easing to a 6/5 victory, as was Isaac.
