Newey keeps the faith

TOM Newey insists he can still do a job in League Two, saying: "I'd back myself against most people in this division."

The 29-year-old has had more than his fair share of stick in recent times as Rotherham United have laboured to climb out of the bottom tier.

He's been out of the firing line more this term having been nudged out of the team by  the former Premier League defender Jon Harley.

With loanee Harley disallowed from playing in the FA Cup by parent club Notts County, Newey got a rare start at Shrewsbury on Saturday.

And although Newey is set to step down again at Hereford tomorrow to accommodate  Harley's return, the former Bury man believes he's still got plenty to offer.

He told the Advertiser: "I thought I started the season pretty well. The manager thought I had a dip in form and brought Jon (Harley) in.

"I had a chance (in the FA Cup tie) at Barrow and thought I did well and then the manager decided to go with Jon again and then I came in on Saturday against a tricky winger and I think I held my own.

"It's who the manager chooses and when Jon has got the shirt it is about waiting patiently.

"I'd like to be involved tomorrow but you know football, it's not down to me. I want to be playing football and at my age now, 29, I need to be. I've played a lot of games in my career and been in decent teams which have been to finals and that's what I want. I don't want to be sitting on the bench and it's down to me to keep working hard and hopefully the manager will see that."
