Mulunda and Hayden deliver fight-night fireworks

"Straight back in the gym next week and keep improving, great experience in the bag I can only get better from here"

Chris Mulunda is determined to lead a revolution in Rotherham boxing - and his win on Saturday on a globally-watched world-title card will have put some force behind that mission.

Novice Mulunda hasn't lost a round in five professional fights.

And his relentless ring activity - Saturday's clean sweep over Harley Collison was his fifth fight in 11 months - will endear him to promoters like Matchroom, who staged Saturday's show at Sheffield Arena, and Queensberry, who gave him a slot on a bill in Gibraltar in July.

In his latest outing, on the Dalton Smith v Alberto Puello bill, the Pearce Gudgeon-trained fighter chased his prey around the ring from the start.

His rival was limited but evasive and determined to smother the Rotherham man's work.

It was all about survival for Collison, and the Southampton opponent did well to absorb a couple of well-delivered body shots.

While not always accurate, Mulunda's domination was comprehensive in what was his first six-rounder.

The 23-year-old middleweight from Greasbrough wasn't able to finish the scrap early, but won the points' battle 60-54.

He'd promised himself some Krispy Kreme donuts after he'd won...and more than deserved the treat.

A banquet of belts may lie ahead.

Joe Hayden, a 27-year-old Dearne Valley southpaw, recorded his 25th straight win on the Arena show, in an eight rounder against fellow Yorkshireman Will Harrison, 28.

'Haydo' opened the evening in electrifying style; he flattened his rival in just 20 seconds with a stiff left hand straight on Harrison's nose.

It was a well-matched tussle, with both fighters enjoying occasional flurries of success.

Harrison turned up the heat in the fifth and had his moments thereafter, but Hayden finished strongly to take a 79-72 points victory.

Hayden is looking to get into domestic title range, he must now fancy his chances of going for the vacant Central Arena strap and then onwards.

He wasn't entirely happy with his performance though saying the bout had been: "A frustrating one because I know I can be so much better.

"Straight back in the gym next week and keep improving, great experience in the bag I can only get better from here."

Dave Allen, his trainer and mentor, added: "25-0 for Joe Hayden huge congratulations to Will Harrison on a super tough effort but another comfortable win and good knockdown scored, back out in February in another 10 rounder, no rushing this game, hard work and doing it right will pay off."

*Rotherham super welterweight Junaid Bostan was at the Arena to promote his fight with fellow Yorkshireman Ishmael Davis at Matchroom’s Monte-Carlo Showdown VII on Saturday, December 12.

Bostan said he would be "there to do a job" and would be "better in every department."

The winner will face Bilal Fawaz, who has beaten them both before.
