Millers narrowly beaten

ROTHERHAM United suffered a first defeat in seven Championship matches despite a gritty display at play-off contenders Brentford.

Fielding new signings Jack Barmby, Adam Hammill and Danny Ward, they competed well but paid the price for not capitalising upon a strong first half and were undone by the only goal of the game from Stuart Dallas.

The Millers could have been in the clear in the first half-hour as they repeatedly got in behind the home side and the three debutants settled well. Hammill flashed an effort just wide on the turn and Matt Derbyshire, recalled to the side, hesitated on a couple of chances before Richie Smallwood failed to convert the best opening, firing weakly at David Button from a good position.

Having threatened only fleetingly in the first half, Brentford improved markedly after the break and took the lead on 57 minutes. Andre Gray’s shot was blocked and Dallas pounced to fire the loose ball inside the post.

While both Hammill and Derbyshire went close to levelling, there was a let-off when Gray, clean through, fired straight at Collin and Jota spooned the rebound over the bar.

Alex Pritchard also hit a post but it took a superb save from Paul Green’s glancing header to deny Rotherham a late equaliser.
