Millers aim to strengthen

MANAGER Steve Evans is aiming to introduce new faces to pump up Rotherham United's promotion challenge.

He says he has identified players he would like to sign, perhaps with a view to permanent transfers, and the matter was now in the hands of the club's hierarchy.

Speaking after Saturday's commanding win at Stevenage, Evans said: "We hope to bring someone in (this week) and if we don't then it won't be for the lack of trying.

"We have a fantastic chairman who never pressures me to move people out but pressures me every day to bring people in. When i joined the club 18 months ago, it had to be about revolution because it wasn't good enough. Now it is about evolution and that's about picking the right players to strengthen us."

A striker is likely to be a priority after Daniel Nardiello was sent on loan to Bury until January. Evans admitted it had been a tough decision to release last season's top scorer but pointed out that he had not been figuring in the team and had allowed the club to accept the request from Bury.

Saturday's 3-0 success, capped by goals from Ben Pringle, the returning Claude Davis and Michael O'Connor, was the Millers' third on the spin following the cup victories against Bradford City and Hartlepool United.

It also ended a run of five without a win in League One and they remain two points outside the play-off frame going into Saturday's home clash with Carlisle.

"It was a good, all-round performance against a strong team," added Evans.
