Kids urged to try ball hockey

A SPORTS team wants to turn more kids onto the fun and exciting sport of ball hockey.

A relatively young sport, it is similar to roller hockey except that the players play in trainers.

Around 30 kids enjoy the game at Simply Skate at Eastwood as part of the Sheffield Steelers ball hockey team at the moment — but more are needed.

They train on Monday nights (5.30pm-6.30pm) under the guidance of head coach Tom Merriman and Steelers ice hockey ace Jason Hewitt also helps out.

With a first tournament coming up in July in Rotherham, the team wants more boys and girls aged 5-16 to give the sport a try.

Victoria Smethurst, who's son, Alex, plays in the team, said: "Ball hockey is fun and healthy and we'd love to get more kids involved. We also need to increase support and revenue because the team is parent-funded at the moment."
