Jordan's the top man for Harriers

THROWER Jordan Carter led the way as Rotherham Harriers finished fourth as Sunday saw the first National Junior League meeting at Herringthorpe Stadium.

Harrier Jordan took the male athlete of the match award with his terrific throw of 61.57m in the A javelin, which propelled him into the top ten national junior rankings. He also won the B hammer for good measure.

The standard of competition in the U20s league has improved markedly this year with the Doncaster and Sheffield clubs, whose young athletes compete in the Northern Premier division, now fighting it out with Rotherham, Scunthorpe, Hull and Boston.

Only three years ago, the age group was very poorly contested with incomplete squads the order of the day, but the hard work of junior coaches at all of the clubs in South Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire has begun to feed through into the older age groups and signs are that the standards will continue to improve as more young athletes pursue their interests\_possibly a sign of the Olympic effect feeding through to all levels of athletics.

At Herringthorpe, Doncaster got off to a flying start and they were never headed, although the final scores illustrate the closeness of the competition.

There were only 18 points between first and second and 20 points between third and fourth. The totals were: Doncaster 448, Sheffield 430, Scunthorpe 389, Rotherham 369, Boston 293 and Hull 203.
