Harriers strike gold

THROWER Leo Rowley claimed two gold medals as Rotherham Harriers had a profitable day in the Yorkshire County Championships at Barnsley’s Dorothy Hyman Stadium.

Harriers were well represented at Cudworth with 38 athletes bringing home 22 medals between them, including eight golds.

Leo proved himself king of the throws in the U17 Men’s competitions as he took gold in the shot with a new personal best of 15.57m.

He then took another gold in the discus with 35.98m and followed up with bronze in the javelin, throwing 31.27m.

Leo is now ranked second in the UK for the 6kg shot and third for the 5kg.

Holly Rodgers was another thrower in great form as she pushed out her PB to 48.48m to take gold in the U20 Women’s hammer. Holly has now improved her best in this event by over 4m this year and is ranked fifth in the UK.

On the track Amy Gellion (U17 Women) and Sarah Zintchem (U15 Girls) completed a golden double in the 300m as both showed the opposition a clean pair of heels in winning their respective heats and finals.
