Along with wife Audrey, John was a very popular figure in the Phoenix clubhouse and was very well known amongst golfers and officials from other clubs in the area.

He played a pivotal role in introducing open events to put the club on the map and was innovative in introducing youth to the club teams during his captain’s year. Several of the youngsters went on to have success in the game, including club pro Michael Roberts.

John's funeral was held on Monday at Herringthorpe, followed by a celebration of his life at Phoenix, where fond memories of John were shared amongst family, friends and fellow golfers.

“It goes without saying, that John's presence within the club will be sadly missed,” said a Phoenix spokesman.
