Golf GTI hits 35 in style

A SPECIAL edition of Volkswagen’s Golf GTI is in the pipelines as the popular hot hatch dons its glad rags on for its 35th birthday.

The Golf GTI Edition 35 marks the 35th anniversary of the Golf GTI brand and comes with a considerable 25bhp power hike over the standard car and a host of aggressive style tweaks.

Now boasting a maximum output of 232bhp—or a more relevant 235PS in European money—will feature a unique front bumper and 18-inch alloys along with the return of the Golf’s iconic golf ball gear lever and tartan seat trim.

There will also be a liberal application of “35” badging on the front wings, sill plates, head restraints and on the centre panel of the seats.

The Golf GTI Edition 35 will make its world debut at the legendary GTI event at Wörthersee, Austria, at the beginning of June, with UK order books opening later this year.

Prices have yet to be announced, but it should easily undercut the more powerful (266bhp), four-wheel-drive Golf R’s rather startling £31,115 starting price.
