Steve Agnew poised to join Rotherham United's management team

IT looks highly likely that Steve Agnew will join Alex Bruce in a new management team at Rotherham United.

The club finally unveiled Bruce as Head Coach this week and the only questioned that remained was the identity of his number two.

Reports that it would be the vastly experienced Agnew were as good as confirmed when Bruce’s father, Steve, spoke about his son’s appointment yesterday.

"Alex had had this opportunity and Steve McClaren (Head of Football) has given him an opportunity,” the former Manchester United captain said on TalkSport.

"So he's got Steve above him and he's took Steve Agnew (assistant) in with him, underneath him, so he's given himself a right chance.”

Bruce jnr and Agnew worked together at Salford City last season under Karl Robinson and Agnew arrived late on to help them get into the League Two play-offs.

Agnew (60) brings vast know-how to help the younger man.

His coaching career has taken him to Middlesbrough, Leeds, Aston Villa, Sheffield Wednesday, Newcastle United, West Brom and Blackpool and many of his jobs have been under Bruce snr.

Bruce jnr (41) had a brief spell as manager of Macclesfield in 2023-24 but this will be his first senior managerial position in full-time football.

His father added: "He's itched at the chance of managing and he's done all the badges and worked hard over the last six, seven, eight years to get all the qualifications you need.

"And of course, then you need somebody to give you the opportunity, and I think it's a great opportunity for him.

"They've had a dismal couple of years, Rotherham, but he'll try his best and I'm sure he'll give it the enthusiasm and the hard work that it requires."

Rotherham’s sixth team boss in four years has signed a contract until 2028. His first competitive match will be a Carabao Cup tie at home to West Bromwich Albion on August 8 before the relegated Millers get their League Two campaign underway away to Cheltenham Town a week later.

“It's a privilege to be here. I'm really excited about the challenge that lies ahead,” said Bruce.

“I hope that I'm going to be the man to deliver success and try and get this club back up and running again."
