Why a Wednesday spying trip was something of a wasted journey for Rotherham United boss Matt Taylor

MANAGER Matt Taylor’s midweek mission to check on Rotherham United's opponents this weekend turned out to be in vain.

The Millers are in Championship action at Cardiff City tomorrow so the boss headed to Blackburn Rovers on Wednesday night to take in the Bluebirds; Carabao Cup third-round tie at Ewood Park.

However, he picked up few clues that will help his team in South Wales as Cardiff's side was totally different to the one that has been doing so well recently in the league.

"They made 11 changes!" Taylor rued. "It's Sod's Law, I suppose, that you go to watch certain players and don't see any of them. A lot of those who have been starting games for them weren't even on the bench.

"That is a luxury some managers at Championship level have. They have a strong squad. They've got a dynamic frontline and there's some real quality in their line-up."

Cardiff's abundance of numbers is in stark contrast to injury-hit Rotherham who had seven men sidelined for last weekend's draw with Preston North End and also lost centre-half Cameron Humphreys in that game to a long-term hamstring issue.

The Bluebirds lost their third-round match 5-2 to Blackburn but in the league they are pushing for a play-off spot after winning five of their last six second-tier outings.

The Millers have yet to pick up a point on their travels and Taylor is hoping the lack of expectation at the Cardiff City Stadium will work in his team's favour.

"We want to pit our wits against them," he said. "There is no pressure on us on the back of our away form.

"It's a great place to play football. It's such a good stadium and Cardiff have an incredible fan base. They are a big club."
