TRIALIST attacker Andre Green has one more chance to catch the eye of manager Matt Taylor and earn a permanent contract with Rotherham United.

The free agent will play against Sheffield United in a pre-season clash at AESSEAL New York Stadium as he bids to find a new club in England following two seasons in Slovakia with Slovan Bratislava.

The former Aston Villa and Sheffield Wednesday man stood out for the Millers with his pace and control in last Saturday's 4-2 friendly win at Mansfield Town and scored the opening goal.

"Andre showed that he can play and he can finish," Taylor said. "It's a strange kind of situation with him. He's had his fits and spurts in English football.

"He had a really big reputation as a young player, then things didn't quite materialise. He went abroad to forge his way in his career and you have to respect that. Now he wants to come back to English football and we're in a position to give him an opportunity."

Green played in the Premier League with Villa after coming through the youth ranks in 2016. He had loans at Portsmouth, Preston North End and Charlton Athletic before a permanent switch to the Owls in January 2021

The 24-year-old, who played in the Champions League with Bratislava, is restricted to two trial outings for Rotherham by EFL rules.

He worked out with the Millers last week in the build-up to the Stags match.

"He's impressed us," said Taylor after Saturday's victory. "He's not had much of a pre-season. I'm looking forward to getting a few more days' training into him and seeing him play again on Tuesday night. Then we'll make a decision."

Georgie Kelly scored a hat-trick against League Two Mansfield and now the striker is relishing the chance to test himself against the top-flight Blades.

"It will be a tough outing against a Premier League club," he said. "It will be great preparation for the season. We need hard games, we need to be under pressure.

"The gaffer wants to see how we handle things when things aren't going well. You don't need easy games where you're hammering teams."
