'The run-in cost us' ... Rotherham United boss Paul Warne reacts to defeat against Middlesbrough and reflects on the drop
Warne's relegated squad finished only four points away from a survival spot despite losing their last four matches and taking only four points from their final eight outings.
"We knew at the start of the season when the fixtures came out that the last eight or ten games didn't exactly look kind," the boss said after a 2-1 defeat at home to Middlesbrough.
Rotherham were the better side in the second half as they tried to claw back a 2-0 half-time deficit but had only an 86th-minute penalty tucked away by Michael Smith to show for their efforts.
"Reflecting on the clash with the Teessiders, Warne said: "It was a microcosm of the season. We were excellent from box to box but not good enough in both boxes to win the game.
“I was glad we got a goal for our fans to have something to cheer about on the final day
“For us to compete as well as we have today and over the season gives me real pride."
