ROTHERHAM United have reduced the amount of money on offer to veteran striker Billy Sharp to move to AESSEAL New York Stadium, manager Matt Taylor has revealed.

The Championship Millers made made an approach well over a month ago following the release of the second tier's record scorer by South Yorkshire neighbours Sheffield United.

The 37-year-old has stalled on accepting what was on the table and Rotherham have now dropped the figure they are prepared to pay.

They have just signed Andre Green and are also targeting  another frontman.

"I have to be honest, that offer has had to change because of what we've spent elsewhere," Taylor told the Advertiser. "What was there six weeks ago, we can't match that anymore. What we have left to spend is a lot less than we had previously.

“We have brought in six players who we feel have made us better, some of them loans, some of them permanent, and we're still looking to add to that number.

“We might not have much left to spend but anyone we do bring in has to be full value. We have to be realistic in what we've spent so far and what we've got left.”

The six players the boss is referring to are goalkeeper Dillon Phillips, midfielder Cafu, right-back Dexter Lembikisa, winger Fred Onyedinma and Green, all of whom have signed contracts, and midfielder Christ Tiehi whose deal is in the process of going through.

Taylor hasn't totally ruled out Sharp joining the club even though the terms have now altered.

“Every player's market will continually change, like our market has changed,” he said. “Players' markets will change dependent on their suitors.

"We might be a lesser financial package for certain players but we're still a good option. The Championship is a good level to play at and we have a good environment to come into.”
