Rotherham United played so well in their most recent outing, against Norwich City, that many admiring fans were describing the performance that brought a 2-1 win at AESSEAL New York Stadium as the best they'd ever seen from a Millers side.

Supporters on social media tagged the silky forward play that opened up the Canaries and the assured defending that kept them at bay as ‘Taylor Ball’, which brought a laugh from the man credited with creating it.

“Taylor Ball?” questioned boss Matt with twinkling eyes. “It's nothing to do with me, believe me. It's the players.”

The manager went on to lay some of the credit at another door: that of his assistant and first-team coach, Wayne Carlisle. “‘Wayno’ does the majority of our attacking play and attacking set-pieces,” he revealed.

The Millers were starting to look an accomplished Championship side as they headed into the international break and Taylor is enthused by what might be about to come as new signings find their feet and other players return from injury to add to the strength on the substitutes' bench.

“As time goes on and Christ Tiehi, Cafu and Ollie Rathbone get fitter, things will improve,” he said. “They are a good midfield three who give you a bit of control. Then in front of them you've got the physicality of Jordan Hugill and the ‘legs’ of Andre Green and Fred Onyedinma. I like the dynamic.”

The manager is never totally satisfied, however, and is always looking for that bit extra. “I still think we can handle the ball better,” he said.
