That song, that goal and that win over top-flight opponents ... the story of Rotherham United 1 Sheffield United 0

THE boos were ringing out at AESSEAL New York Stadium before a ball had even been kicked.

Nearly 4,000 Sheffield United supporters packed into the away end and down the East Stand were singing the 'Greasy Chip Butty' song and Rotherham United followers weren't having it.

That's an old Millers ditty pinched by the Blades many years ago.

Not long afterwards, those boos became disbelieving cheers as arguably the most astonishing goal ever witnessed at the ground settled the pre-season derby in the home side's favour.

Jordan Hugill challenged for the ball in the 11th minute, it fell towards Andre Green who was standing almost on the byline and one 'scorpion' flick later it was sailing over the head of goalkeeper Wes Foderingham and into the net.

Impossible, almost, and not a bad way for the trialist to put up his hand for a contract! That made it two goals in two matches for the former Aston Villa prospect.

Rotherham played well, picking up where they left off the previous weekend at Mansfield Town. The difference was, this time they were up against Premier League opposition, not a side from the fourth tier.

“It's another confidence-booster," said manager Matt Taylor, with Championship opening day only a week and a half away. "It was a bit more like what I want us to look like.

“We forced the game and played some good football. We went ahead and you always feel more comfortable in a game when you're in front. It was a pretty entertaining match.”

The Millers were on it from the off. Green's big moment came after Viktor Johansson had made a routine save from Iliman Ndiaye and Tyler Blackett was only inches away from doubling the advantage with a cushioned volley from Cafu's corner.

Cafu can cross and Cafu can shoot. The Portuguese new boy had Foderingham diving full stretch to palm away a curling effort and then smacked the bar with a thumping 30-yard free-kick.

“He’s going to score a ‘worldie’ soon,” Taylor said. “If we get dead-ball situations in the final third I want our fans to be on the edge of their seats expecting something.

“We've asked him to play a little bit deeper while we build up his sharpness so the game is a little bit more in front of him. I can't wait to see him in the next layer of the pitch.”

In between Cafu’s efforts, Johansson's stunning close-range reflexes denied Daniel Jebbison who was then thwarted on the follow-up by Cameron Humphreys' full-blooded block

Did Green mean it? He said he did. But surely he didn't. That angle, that touch, the exquisite timeless loft. What the hell, take his word for it. Life is more fun that way and who wants realism over romance?

“It was a strange goal," said Taylor, not the type of character to ever let himself get too carried away with anything. “To be honest, I thought Andre looked ‘leggy’, a bit tired. We have to understand where he is in terms of his fitness levels.

“But he's a good physical specimen. He's impressed us with his eye for goal in his week's training, and that's shown in the games he's played for us.”

After the break, Jebbison tested Johansson again when he managed to muscle his way past Grant Hall and Ndiaye flashed a volley just wide. At the other end, Cohen Bramall played in Ben Wiles only for the midfielder's shot to go just the wrong side of the woodwork as it whistled into the North Stand

Then came an avalanche of late substitutions that disrupted the flow of the contest and meant the Millers could see it out without any undue alarm.

Taylor focused on the first 75 minutes rather than the last 15: “I was looking at how our players moved and it was good," he said. “I was pleased with the contribution of some individuals.

“The back three were the best I've seen them. They were a really strong unit. Tyler Blackett looked like he went into ‘beast’ mode at times.

“In other areas of the pitch we had a degree of creativity, not just from set-pieces but in open play as well.”

Eight minutes after the restart, the scorer left to appreciative applause from fans who have quickly taken to him.

They're not the only ones to like what they have seen and Taylor seemed to be leaning towards offering the attacker a deal.

“He can play down the middle and out wide,” the boss said. “He probably started out in his younger years as a wider player and has found a home more centrally. I think he's more suited to that.

“We need flexibility next season - a little bit like when we had Chieo (Ogbene) last year. Flicking a switch and changing shape will be so, so important. We need more in the wide areas. To have someone who can cover that would certainly be beneficial.”

Whatever his future, Green will always be remembered at New York for that strike.

It filled up your senses.
