TEN-MAN Rotherham United suffered stoppage-time heartache as they came agonisingly close to toppling Championship leaders Burnley at Turf Moor tonight.

They led 2-1 at the end of the regulation 90 minutes but were then hit by a double blast that included a 100th-minute winner for the home side.

The Millers put in an epic display against the best side in the division and deserved to hang on for a point.

Rotherham whose goals came from Ben Wiles and Chiedozie Ogbene, had to play for more than 25 minutes a man down after Cohen Bramall was shown a red card for a late challenge.

It took Wiles just two minutes 13 seconds to score against the club who had made three bids to sign him in the summer.

Bramall fed Ollie Rathbone who played the ball out wide to the right for Brooke Norton-Cuffy to race down the wing and deliver a perfect cross to the back post.

There was Wiles to head home and rock the team who had been prepared to pay more than £2 million for his services.

A Rotherham block on the goalline five minutes later kept the visitors in front as Burnley pressed for a quick retort.

Soon afterwards, Wiles tried his luck again and his low, scuffed effort from the edge of the area was diverted for a corner.

The rain was sheeting across the stadium on a cold, windy night in Lancashire but that did nothing to dampen the spirits of the Millers' travelling faithful as they noisily enjoyed being in the lead.

A sharp save from Viktor Johansson brought more cheers from the away section as he denied Johann Gudmundsson a 23rd-minute volleyed leveller.

The Clarets had come into the clash on the back of three straight wins and the class of an outfit who had lost only once all season and never at home was evident.

However, Matt Taylor's men were holding firm and looking to attack on the break when they could.

Conor Washington got away from two markers and his shot was speeding into the bottom corner before goalkeeper Arijanet Muric got a hand to it.

Seconds later, at the other end, the home side hit back.

Gudmunsson - a Millers target in the reign of Steve Evans - floated in a cross from the right and when it was touched back across goal Jay Rodriguez nodded in from virtually underneath the bar.

Burnley thought they were about to go in front through Nathan Tella but Rathbone was there to boot the ball off the line.

Rodriguez headed just off a target as the rain finally abated and the first half ended on level terms.

Manager Taylor had made three changes to the team that had lost 1-0 at Cardiff City on Saturday.

Grant Hall returned to the defence after serving a one-match ban and there were starts at wing-back and in midfield respectively for Norton-Cuffy and Hakeem Odoffin.

Midfielder Wiles was pushed forward in a role just behind lone striker Washington.

On a bench that included Richard Wood and Georgie Kelly - both starters at Cardiff City Stadium - was top scorer Ogbene, fit again after missing five games with a hamstring injury.

The Millers had spent all of the of the second half on the back foot until the introduction of Ogbene brought stunning results.

The sub had been on the pitch for only a minute when he took advantage of a Burney lapse, raced in on goal and tucked the ball beyond Muric and in off the post.

Bramall walked ten minutes later when his tackle on Connor Roberts brought a second yellow caRD but Rotherham refused to yield and Jamie Lindsay missed a chance to extend their lead as he shot to close to Muric.

Johansson thwarted Roberts at point-blank range and Ashley Barnes had an effort ruled out for offside as the tension rose and the clock ticked down.

The clash has just gone into ten minutes of added time when Manuell Benson cut in from the right and curled a superb shot into the far corner.

Worse was to follow in the last miute when Halil Dervisoglu tapped in the decider and Lindsay then passed up on a chance to equalise.

So, so cruel on the Millers.
