The midfielder, who has been a stand-out performer for the Millers this term, exited proceedings in the second half at the bet365 Stadium following an awkward landing as he contested a ball in the air.

The 32-year-old, who suffered cruel luck with injuries in his first season with Rotherham last year, is expected to have the procedure today (Monday).

"Shauny Mac is of the Richard Wood mantle in that he doesn't go down unnecessarily," said manager Paul Warne. "I heard him scream. He has had a knee problem before, so I was a bit anxious about that."

MacDonald was down on the turf receiving treatment for several minutes before being replaced by Matt Crooks.

"He was in pain so I made the change," Warne said. "He wanted to play on but by the time he got to me he was stiffening up, so that is obviously going to be a scan."

The Millers are keeping their fingers crossed about the verdict on the player who has been superb in a holding role since the club's promotion from League One.

"Hopefully he will be okay," Warne said. "He has been instrumental for us at the start of the campaign, so hopefully he is not injured for the long term."
